The conference will feature a mixture of talks and hands-on practical sessions presented by some of the region’s most prominent riders and coaches. One of the key speakers will be Mark Walker, Deputy Head of the School of Sport, Equine and Animal Sciences at Writtle College. Mark’s presentation will include details of his research into pacing strategy and workload demands of competing in amateur and elite cyclo-cross. Additional sessions include practical cyclo-cross coaching and an update on cyclo-cross coaching qualifications from British Cycling Coach Education. The conference will conclude with a discussion on how to set up a Cyclo-Cross Coaching work group in the region.

The organisers, Mark Wyer (Chair of the EC-CA) and Mark Walker are hoping this will become an annual event, perhaps of national significance, attracting delegates from all over the country. There are just 30 places available for this event so please book as soon as possible.

Who is the event for? Coaches and riders who want to learn about some of the latest developments and research in cyclo-cross.

It's open to league members and friends only, so you'll be told you need to "Ask to join" when you follow that link. If you think it's likely that I won't recognise you from your Facebook account, please email webmaster@easterncross.org.uk. We understand that not everyone has or wants a Facebook account, so this website (www.easterncross.org.uk) remains the place where we'll make our important announcements. You won't be losing anything if you don't join the Facebook group, but you might gain something if you do.

2 Feb 12: Occasionally, a rider may feel the need to complain about something that has happened during a race. Any rider who wishes to make a protest at either a Commissaire's decision, or regarding an incident during the race must do so within 30 minutes of the race result being declared. Any correspondence outside of this time may be noted but not acted upon [British Cycling Rule 16.1.4.7]. Basically, sending an email on the evening after a race is too late for us to help.

28 Jan 12: Chris Doug has posted photos from Mistley.

28 Jan 12: Some of you will be aware that one of our under-12 riders, Joe Kiely, was taken to hospital following a crash during his warm-up at Mistley. Joe's father Dave gave us the following update on Tuesday: 'First of all it was an accident and we don't want anybody to feel guilty or responsible in any way. In fact I want to especially praise the St John's ambulance people, who were brilliant. If somehow you could pass my gratitude on to them I would be grateful.

There were some bystanders who looked after Joe and showed great kindness, particularly a man with his daughter who wrapped Joe in his coat. There was also a junior racer in blue who sprinted across the field to raise the alarm. I'm afraid I didn't get anyone's name as it was all such a whirlwind, but they know who they are. And special thanks to Tim Butler for letting me pile all my bikes and kit into his van and looking after them for me and the lady from the league who dropped everything to help me.

Joe managed to go off course and down the steep descent on the adult course where he "lost it" and collided with a tree.

He was briefly knocked out and was clearly in some distress. It turns out he'd fractured his skull and several bones in his face. He had a scan which showed some bleeding around his brain. It was a bit worrying for the first 24 hrs as he was very lethargic and they monitored him closely in Colchester General.

He now appears to be out of the "Danger Zone" and has been discharged home, but it's looking like he'll need some surgery to put his facial bones back in place. We knew he was getting better the next morning when a nurse asked him if he had any allergies and he answered "Just trees!"'

27 Jan 12: As agreed at last year's AGM, there will be an award for the best league event of the season, as decided by the riders. Please click to vote for your favourite event. The closing date is 3rd February, 2012 and the award will be presented at the end of season team event on 4th February.

21 Jan 12: If you're racing in the 11:00 race at Mistley on Sunday, please make sure you collect a special timing sticker at sign-on and attach it to your helmet. This is for the "chip" timing system, which we are trialling. We'll be using the PDA-based service too, so we still need yor numbers to be visible. Other races during the day will use only the PDA system.

21 Jan 12: A message from Bary Denny, organiser of the Inter Club Cyclo Cross on 4th Feb at Bury St Edmunds: "Whilst this is a mainly Team Event with the best three from each club counting in each race, we are accepting entries from individuals in all races. Some riders may like to make a weekend of it in Bury St Edmunds as we are holding our Suffolk Punch Reliability Ride the following day. It starts from our Club Room in Shakers Lane with a choice of 36, 60 or 75 mile routes and schedules between 11 and 18 mph. Entry fee £5. This year’s event is being held in memory of the late Brian Philips with proceeds going to help fund an East Grinstead CC team in the Team Time Trial event in Italy where Brian died last year. Full details on www.westsuffolkwheelers.co.uk."
