Report: Sunday's Broome Heath scramble saw a repeat of last years snowy conditions, organisers velo club Baracchi from Lowestoft manfully travelled over in the early hours to set up the event in subzero temperatures.
The senior event saw the welcome return to cyclocross of David Nichols, having spent the majority of this year based in Belguim road racing with one win and several top 10 placings to his name, David has taken a break from cross this season but as defending Broome champion made a welcome return.
The start was lead away by David Nichols (van eyck sport) closely followed by his brother Andy (cambridge Uni), David showed his strength by being one of the few who was able to ride a frozen sand bank where most still had to dismount and run, David had brother Andy and Nathan Miller (xrt - elmy cycles) for company at the end of the 1st lap, with gaps already forming behind, after a couple of laps the pace at the front began to take its toll on David whose 7 hour road rides have left him with little speed in the legs, with Andy and Nathan locked in battle up front, local rider Shaun Aldous (extreme sports therapy) caught and passed David, having lost time in the early laps Shaun spent the later half of the race pursuing the two up front holding a gap of around 20 secs, Having recovered David bagan to claw his way back to Shaun with Hayden Wood (unnattached) for company, these two looked like catching Shaun until a puncture thwarted David's efforts.
Controversy at the finish as Nathan crossed the line first with Andy rolling in a few seconds further back and going straight to the commissaire, apparently unhappy with the amount of force Nathan exerted in getting to the front for the last narrow section before the finish. Ben Paton (amis velo) showed class of the past, a former league champion came away as 1st elte vet.
Showing what a family sport cyclocross is the Buick family went away with 1st woman, 1st girl and 1st vet, though Dad Phil didn't sport the festive tinsel headwear that his daughters Anna and Imogen raced in.
Alan Trolove (west suffolk wheelers) and Cameron Toms (extreme sports therapy) were never more than 2 seconds apart in the youth race with Alan sprinting in for the win.
Sophie Holmes (diss and district) nearly beat all the boys in the under 12's race, only Zak Coleman (gt yarmouth cc) managed to stay out in front for the win.
