The Elmy Cycles Eastern Cyclo Cross League runs from September to February, covering the counties Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
Joining the League is great value, though you don't have to join to ride the events. The cost for the 2014-15 season is £15 for seniors, £11 for juniors and £8 for youths. As a league member you get the opportunity for a discount on the entry fee for each league race, news updates, and of course, you're eligible for league points.
The league offers prizes for the top riders at the end of the season in various categories: senior, under 23, veteran, junior, women, youth and under 12, 10 and 8. League placings are determined by your best finishing positions in about two thirds of the league races. The league honours its old friend, the late Ivan Jeckell by awarding the Ivan Jeckell Trophy each year to the best club or team.
Cyclo cross is suitable for experienced racers and novices alike. New faces are always welcome. If you're a beginner, take a look at our guide for people who are new to cyclo-cross. For league races just bring your bike and helmet and sign on - mountain bikes are allowed. For other events different rules may apply - if in doubt, check with the race organiser.
|You can join us at our EasternCross Facebook group. It's open to league members and friends only, so you'll be told you need to "Ask to join" when you follow that link. If you think it's likely that we won't recognise you from your Facebook account, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.|
30 Sep 14: The location of Norwich ABC's league round 14 on 30th November 2014 is now confirmed as Fritton Lake.
21 Sep 14: Details are now on the web site for the previosuly "tbc" league round 10 at Hillyfields.
21 Sep 14: Results are posted for some of today's league round 4 at Springfield. U10 and U12 results are there now; others will follow during the day.
20 Sep 14: Results are posted for today's league round 3 at Hoggenberg.
16 Sep 14: Riders are reminded that cameras are not allowed to be fixed to bikes or on riders during racing. It contravenes British Cycling Regulation 3.2.7 which applies to all types of racing and states:
“Pumps, spare tyres and race computers must be securely fastened. All other equipment not essential for racing purposes must be removed.”
Any riders spotted with cameras at the call up will not be allowed to start or will be disqualified if seen during racing.
16 Sep 14: For all U16 and U14 'Cross riders who are considering racing in Belgium, we'll be sharing more information and collecting expressions of interest at Hog Hill this Saturday 20th September.
If you're a rider who is planning to ride the National Trophy series this year, then Belgium could be good experience for you.
We'll probably be suggesting dates in the Christmas holidays for a trip over to Belgium, though U16s may also want to consider November dates. Remember, we provide information and advice only - you'll need to cover your own expenses for transport and accommodation, etc. - we estimate these as £400+ per adult & racer, though it could be less if you can share with another pair. Under 16's can hope to race twice in a weekend, though U14s are only permitted to race once per week by Belgian regulations.
Dates for possible trips to Belgium will be firmed up in the next few weeks, prior to the main information and planning session on October 18th, probably held at Writtle College, near Chelmsford. We are hoping interested parents and racers will then group together to travel over on specific dates.
There will be a short presentation in the Hog Hill cafe at 12.30 on Saturday. For those of you that want to leave earlier or can't make it, one or more of the Development Fund Committee (Mark Fraser, James Asker, Paul Miller, Geraint Davies, Peter Hall) will be sitting in the cafe with some information, for drop-by conversations, between 12 and 1 pm.
14 Sep 14: Results are posted for today's league round 2 at Hillyfields. Apologies, but due to a technical issue with the results software, the times (and hence lap-o-meter) for the senior/junior race are incorrect. However, the positions and lap counts are correct as far as we know. As usual, you should send any results queries to email@example.com.
13 Sep 14: Race Entry Clarification:
To ensure priority for league members' entry into races,
please note that from the Hoggenberg event on the 20th September,
the £3 league membership discount will only apply to on-line advance entries.
For the first two events we are aware that it had been cheaper to enter on the day thus avoiding the BC admin fee. This discouraged people from entering on line and penalised those who did. On-line entry is essential to allow the sport to grow and helps the organisation tremendously. We thank you for your continued support.
10 Sep 14: On-line entries for the Sen/Jun/Wom/Vets event at the non-league Ashwell 'Cross are now open. There is on-line entry only for this event. Youths may enter in advance as well.
10 Sep 14: A few veterans have been asking about riding "out of category"; here's how it works.
The senior/junior race is effectively an open race.
That means that anyone who is 16 or over on 31st December 2014 can ride in it.
There are no separate prizes for over-40s,
and you will not get British Cycling veteran ranking points
(though you can earn BC senior ranking points if you finish high enough).
The other races are restricted category. That means the only people allowed to ride the Vet 40-49 race are men who will be between 40 and 49 on 31st December 2014. The only people allowed to ride the Women/Vet 50+ race are (a) women, and (b) men who will be 50 or over on 31st December 2014.
If you're a veteran and you want to ride two races in a day, you can do so but one must be your "official" race (i.e. Vet 40-49 or Women/Vet 50+ as appropriate) and the other must be the senior/junior race.
League membership works similarly but you can only be in one league during the year. If you are a veteran and you would prefer to compete in the senior league, you need to join as a veteran (this is currently your only choice on the British Cycling site) and then email the results compiler to request a change of league category.
10 Sep 14: A couple of things you can do to help the judging team:
Please pin your numbers at bum height, not in the middle of your back.
When you are in race position, judges can't see your back.
If you see someone with their number pinned incorrectly, please help them to adjust it to the correct position.
Numbers need 4 pins - a few were only secured with 3 pins on Saturday
- this resulted in them ripping and flapping about so judges were unable to see the number at all!
This applies to kids too.
If having started, you are unable to complete your race, you (or your parent/friend) should inform the judges of your race number. If the judges don’t know you have dropped out of the race, they will be searching for you, which can delay subsequent races. This includes U10 and U12 races. Sometimes the rider has had enough and just goes off with their parents, leaving the judges to worry about a missing child. If your child does not go through the chequered flag, please tell the judges.
7 Sep 14: Corrected categories in yesterday's result.
7 Sep 14: The lap-o-meter is now showing riders in the correct order.
6 Sep 14: Apologies, the lap-o-meter is currently listing riders in number order rather than finishing position. I'll get that fixed as soon as I can, probably tomorrow.
6 Sep 14: Results are posted for today's league round 1 at Basildon. League tables will follow in due course (but you can get a fair idea of what they will look like by examining today's race result).
30 Aug 14: You are reminded that you can enter league round 1 at Basildon on line in advance via the British Cycling website. If you know you'll be coming, you'll be doing us a big favour by entering in advance. The sign-on and results crews have more work this year with the extra race in the schedule, and having the majority of riders pre-entered will help with that. And, of course, it means you're guaranteed a ride.
30 Aug 14: Many thanks to everyone who has already volunteered to help with the results service this year.
That said, everyone who has volunteered has done it before.
We need more people, and that means we need some new faces to join the team.
Please email Susannah if you are able to help at a couple of races.
Volunteers never miss their race;
You can bagsy an indoors job;
Helping at just 2 or 3 events is a huge help. (More is fab);
You usually get a free cuppa - and sometimes a piece of cake too;
You can claim mileage from the league.
It's pretty straightforward for anyone who can play a game on their phone. It would be great if each club in the league has a representative on the results squad.
30 Aug 14: Posted the list of registered riders. These are the riders who are eligible for entry fee discount and league points at league round 1 at Basildon. If you're a veteran but you'd prefer to ride in the Open (senior) race, you'll need to let me know asap.
13 Aug 14: Note that you need to be logged in to your British Cycling account before you can join the league. Please only email Keely if you're having problems and you've checked that you're logged in. Thanks.
13 Aug 14: The Eastern Youth Cyclocross Development Fund ("Helping the region’s young riders to gain Belgian racing experience") is now up and running. Take a look at their opening announcement to find out what it's about and how to get involved.
7 Aug 14: We're now taking League entries via the British Cycling web site. Please take care to join the correct age category. It's your age on 31st December 2014 that counts, not your age when you join the league.
15 Jun 14: The fixture list for the coming season is now announced. Subscribe to the on-line calendar on Apple devices, Android devices, Google Calendar, Outlook 2010 (and possibly other systems) to have your personal calendar automatically updated. You'll see from the individual race pages that we've added another race into the race day schedule in an effort to lessen the likelihood of races filling up. We also plan to offer on-line entry in advance, but we haven't yet worked out all the details. Watch this space for further announcements.
26 Feb 14: The 2014 AGM minutes are now posted.
20 Feb 14: If you still have your league number, please return it to: Keely Bunton, 4 Coleridge Road, Maldon, Essex, CM9 6DH. Please include a note stating your name and category. Thanks.
20 Feb 14: From fixture co-ordinator Hannah Ormesher: Eastern League members! This season's doors have barely closed but preparations are under way for the 2014/15 calendar and I will be getting in touch with our regular fixture holders shortly to put a draft calendar in place. It would be exciting to be able to hold some new events this year and the league is on the look-out for promoters and organisers for the upcoming season. If anyone has any ideas for a new venue and a club willing to host please do get in touch - even if you're not sure where to start we can offer advice on how to make it happen! Please submit your interest to Hannah by the end of this month, we look forward to hearing from you! Let’s continue building on Eastern’s strong reputation to make the 2014/15 season even better!
20 Feb 14: We have accumulated a large bag of lost property over the season. 20 Feb 14: I'm told that people ride bikes even when it's not winter. Cyclo-cross stalwart Adrian Grimwood is once again organising the Ixworth Criteriums in May. It's a great day out, either as a rider or spectator.

9 Jan 14: If you're planning to ride the Central league event at Welwyn on 19th January 2014, please be aware that only those riders entering in advance will be gridded. Anyone turning up on the day takes pot luck.
9 Jan 14: Congratulations to League member Sean Dunlea (Ciclos Uno) on winning the Junior National Trophy Series. After finishing eighth in an eventful and muddy final ride at Shrewsbury, Sean clinched the Junior Series with 161 points, 13 points ahead of nearest challenger Dylan Kerfoot-Robson. Hugo Robinson (Neon Velo) was ninth in the Under 23 overall standings, while Steve Davies (Hargroves) was 2nd and Dave McMullen (Cotswold Veldrijden) 4th in the Over 50 category, and Sophia Chastell (Welwyn) was 9th youth girl.
2 Jan 14: Medal winners are highlighted in the league tables where we know them. Some categories are sewn up already but in the majority it's all to play for at the last round.
31 Dec 13: Proposals are invited for the Association AGM, which will take place after the end-of-season Team Championships at Mistley on Sunday 9th February 2014. Proposals must be received by Keely Bunton (Association Secretary) by 13th January 2013. Click here for the 2013 AGM minutes. 2 Dec 13: Fergus Muir has posted photos and a report from Grafham Water.
30 Nov 13: Results are posted for today's league round 11 at Grafham Water. Due to a technical issue (battery failure), the lap-o-meter for the middle portion of the women/vet race is a bit rubbish (sorry).

23 Nov 13: Results are posted for today's league round 10 at Redgrave.
18 Nov 13: An announcement from Mandy Burchett (Hempton chief commissaire): "I apologise for the extra lap in the vets/ladies event. I messed up the timing/lap board completely. Am so sorry. Didn't do too well with the working out for the youth senior event (they came up a little short for the leaders). I hope you can all forgive me, I usually get it right, but I am only human!".
18 Nov 13: Fergus Muir has posted photos and a report from Hempton.
17 Nov 13: Results are posted for today's league round 9 at Hempton.
14 Nov 13: Added the team league table. Team positions are calculated from the team's best three riders' individual league points for each race. If you're using a non-touch device, you can hover your mouse over the points cells to see which riders contributed to that week's team score.
9 Nov 13: Full details are now published for the Eastern & South Eastern Regional Championships at Trinity Park, Ipswich, including how you can enter. It's advance entries only, except for under 10s and under 12s. All league members are encouraged to ride this event but be aware it is a stand-alone event, not part of the Eastern League.

15 Oct 13: Reminder: there is a course for the new Level 2 Cyclo-Cross Coaching Award at Bury St. Edmunds on the 2nd and 3rd November. The more coaches from the region we can get on this course the better it is for the development of our riders. More details here at British Cycling.
13 Oct 13: Results are posted for today's league round 6 at Hillyfields.
8 Oct 13: We have a new facebook group administrator in the shape of Clive Sparkes. If you want to join the group but you're not a league member and you think Clive may not know you, please email him to explain who you are.
6 Oct 13: Many of you wil know that junior riderr Sean Dunlea is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness this month. After his first race in pink yesterday at Welwyn, Sean said, "I'd like to thank the generous people who donated money to my Breast Cancer Awareness month fundraiser today! Please have a look at my blog post explaining what I'm doing."
6 Oct 13: Apologies to league riders who have been ungridded this season. A glitch related to the move to on-line league registration meant that some riders did not get gridded properly in their first race as a league rider this season. We'll try to sort this out by next week. (For anyone interested in the boring detail, it's due to the fact that we now use riders' names as registered with British Cycling. For many riders, this does not match the name they used previously, e.g. Steve vs. Steven. So, until they had ridden one race this year under their full name, we didn't pick up their correct ranking.)
5 Oct 13: Results are posted for today's league round 5 at Welwyn.
3 Oct 13: John Mullineaux has posted videos from Hoggenberg.
29 Sep 13: Lost property from Hoggenberg: a pair of cycling gloves, a pump and a camera lens cap. These items are with Welwyn organiser Graeme Anderson.

25 Sep 13: Fergus Muir has posted photos and a report from Baldock.
21 Sep 13: Results are posted for today's league round 3 at Baldock.
19 Sep 13: Eastern league cyclo-cross races are limited to 80 riders on the course.
In order to reduce the chance of disappointment,
there will be a new sign-on procedure at the CC Ashwell event on Saturday, 21st September, 2013.
League members will be given priority.
So, only people who are in the league (i.e. the people on
the registered members page)
will be allowed to sign on more than one hour before the race.
Non-league riders can add their names to a reserve list.
They must do this in person.
One hour before the race, if the race is not full, riders will be invited to sign on in reserve list order.
The rider needs to be in the HQ to claim their place
- if they are not there, it will be offered to the next rider on the list.
League riders who arrive less than an hour before the race must join the reserve list, if there is one. They do not get priority at this point.
Note that this still does not guarantee that league riders will be able to race, because there are more than 80 registered riders eligible for each of the adult races. If a league rider is not able to enter the women/veterans race, they may join the reserve list for the senior race.
This is an experimental procedure. The committee will review the outcome to decide whether to retain it or modify it for subsequent events.
18 Sep 13: Note to new league members: please take a look at the list of registered riders before your first race. You'll find your league number there, which will save time at sign-on. If you're not on the list, it means that you didn't get your entry in prior to the 7 day cut-off. Please do not complain to the sign-on crew about this.
18 Sep 13: More lost property from Springfield: another kid's hoody (black), a kid's anorak, a kid's waterproof coat, an anorak hood and a pair of adult gloves. These items are with Springfield organiser Ed Beighton.

10 Sep 13: Lost property from Springfield: a cycle top, a child's hoodie, sunglasses, a pump, water bottles. We still have gloves and a set of keys from Basildon. Please contact next week's organiser Mark Wyer or reclaim at round 3 at Baldock next week.
15 Sep 13: Results are posted for today's league round 2 at Springfield.
13 Sep 13: League tables are now published. There's no Team competition table yet; that will follow in due course.
10 Sep 13: Lost property from Basildon: a glove, a pair of sunglasses and a set of house keys. Please contact organiser Graham Hart or reclaim at round 2 at Springfield on Sunday.
7 Sep 13: Well, we have a result from league round 1 at Basildon tonight after all. There's no league table yet, partly because the league table isn't hugely interesting after only one round. League tables will be published starting from round 2.
7 Sep 13: We're working on the results from today's league round 1 at Basildon but there are a number of technical issues delaying us. We'll get them published as soon as we can, but it may not be before tomorrow afternoon.
31 Aug 13: Attention all Coaches. British Cycling will be running a Level 2 Cyclo Cross Coach course on Saturday/Sunday 2nd/3rd November at Bury St Edmunds. Anyone interested should follow this link to the article on the British Cycling website.
31 Aug 13: Your league needs you!
The league urgently needs more PDA operators. If you can send a text then you can operate the PDA.
A couple of the longstanding operators are no longer able to help this year, leaving a massive gap in the team. If you or a member of your family (14 or over) is willing to help out at some of the races for an hour or so, it will keep the PDA service running. If you want to stay in the warm HQ, that's fine - we need someone to load up the PDAs with riders' names and rankings. If you want to see the racing action you can help score 1 or more of the races. There is always a paper backup - the race result does NOT depend entirely on you. However, the speed with which the results are produced most definitely does!
We would really like volunteers from all over the region to help. Please don't wait for someone else to volunteer: if you can help, email Susannah.
31 Aug 13: Remember that even with on-line entries, you still need to join the league at least 7 days before your first race. Basically, that means today is the last day to join if you want your ride at the Essex Roads Cross at Basildon to count.
15 Aug 13: Apologies for the delay, but we're now taking League entries via the British Cycling web site. As previously announced, you need to be a member of British Cycling to join the League.
14 Jul 13: The parking and sign-on arrangements for the Essex Roads Cross at Basildon are different to last year. Full information is on the race detail page.
12 Jul 13: 31st August 2013 - Cyclo Cross commissaires course. British Cycling will be running a commissaires training course on Saturday 31st August, just ahead of the start of the new season. Anyone interested in becoming a commissaire is encouraged to attend, as are any existing commissaires who would like to refresh their knowledge. The course is free and is open to anyone, aged 18 or over, providing they hold BC membership. On the day training will last around 4 hours and there is a short on-line module to complete prior to the course. The venue will be confirmed as soon as possible. To register your interest or to request further information please contact Sara Flatt, Regional Events Officer, on 07940 872228 or email@example.com.
9 Jun 13: The fixture list for the coming season is now announced. Subscribe to the on-line calendar on Apple devices, Android devices, Google Calendar, Outlook 2010 (and possibly other systems) to have your personal calendar automatically updated.
9 Jun 13: I've had a lot of requests to join the Facebook group in the past few days from people whom I don't recognise. That's fine, but the group is supposed to be restricted to members and friends of the League. The thing is, I'm not psychic. If I don't know who you are, I can't accept you into the group. Basically, what I do is to search for your Facebook name within the easterncross.org.uk site. If I get a match on your name, I accept you; if I don't, I don't. So, if you've tried to join the group but you haven't been accepted, please email me to explain who you are.
9 Jun 13: League entries for 2013-14 aren't open yet but when they are, it's likely that we'll be moving to an on-line registration system. As a consequence, we will require that all League members must be members of British Cycling. For most League riders, who are already members of British Cycling, this will make no difference. Bronze membership will be sufficient.
7 Feb 12: Lost property from Mistley: Nike training bottoms, other training bottoms, ear muffs, a helmet, mitts, shower proof top, 2no arm warmers (not a pair), child's fleece top, child's coat. Contact Tim Butler on 01473 414546 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
6 Feb 13: Simon Parker has posted photos from Mistley.
6 Feb 13: Congratulations to Iceni Velo, whose Snetterton event was voted the best league event of the season.
3 Feb 13: Results are posted for today's end of season Team Championships at Mistley.
23 Jan 13: ECXA Team Champs and Prize Presentation - Sunday 3rd February 2013. Don't forget to get your entries in to Ken Baker Colchester Rovers. Closing Date this Sunday, 27th January 2013. If entering on-line please email Ken to let him know which team you are in. Also if he has your team details don't forget to let him have your entry. We want this to be a relaxed and fun event so if you cannot get a Club Team together for a particular category then why not join with others to make up a team - just try to wear the same colour jerseys if possible.
23 Jan 13: The 2013 AGM minutes are now posted. In brief:
22 Jan 13: Each year, there is an award for the best league event of the season, chosen by you, the riders. Please click to vote for your favourite event. The closing date is 31st January, 2013 and the award will be presented at the end of season team event on 3rd February.
21 Jan 13: Fergus Muir has posted photos and a report from Bury.
19 Jan 13: Lost property from Bury: two backpacks and a hankie that looks as though it might have been clean before it was used to wipe the mud off its owner's face. Also a banana, but that might no longer be available by the time it's claimed.
19 Jan 13: Results are posted for today's league round 14 at Bury.
19 Jan 13: If you are currently holding an Eastern 'Cross trophy, please return it today. Thank you.
19 Jan 13 08:30: I'm sitting here at King Edward VI school, and today's race is definitely ON. If you're using a satnav, you might want to make a point of taking Springfield Road, rather than following your satnav's directions.
8 Jan 13: Entries are now open for the end-of-season Team Championships at Mistley on 3rd February 2013. See the race details page for instructions and links on how to enter. Note that you need to let the organiser know which team you are riding for.
